Matadi, town in the west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, capital of Bas-Congo Region, and a seaport on the estuary of the River Congo near the border with Angola. It is connected by rail with Kinshasa. Most of the country's exports, other than the minerals of Katanga Region, are shipped from Matadi, including coffee, cocoa, rice, timber, palm products, cotton, copal (a resin), and minerals; the town has one of the largest harbours in Central Africa. Pharmaceuticals are also manufactured here. Population 172,730 (1994 estimate).
