Kanawha or Great Kanawha, river, west central West Virginia, formed by the confluence of two headstreams, the New and Gauley rivers at Gauley Bridge. Kanawha is navigable and flows about 156 km (about 97 mi) north-west across the state until it meets the Ohio River at Point Pleasant. The largest city on the course of the river is Charleston. The Little Kanawha River is a parallel tributary of the Ohio River.
