Suppé, Franz von, full name Francesco Ezechiele Ermengildo Cavaliere Suppe Demelli (1819-1895), Austrian composer of operettas, born in Spalato, Dalmatia (now Split, Croatia). In 1865 he became conductor at the Leopoldstädt Theatre in Vienna. Among his most important operettas are Leichte Cavallerie (Light Cavalry, 1866), Fatinitza (1876), and Boccaccio (1879). The overture to his operetta Dichter und Bauer (Poet and Peasant, 1846) remains a popular concert piece.
