Mosel or Moselle, river, western Europe, about 515 km (320 mi) long, rising in the Vosges mountain range, north-eastern France, where it is called the Moselle River. It flows in a generally northern direction into Germany and joins the River Rhine at Koblenz. Much of the river is navigable by small craft, and, since the 1960s, for 274 km (170 mi) by larger vessels. The German section of the river is famous as a wine-producing region.
