Lake Biel (French, Bienne), lake, north-western Switzerland, located in Bern Canton, in the Jura Mountains, at an elevation of about 427 m (1,400 ft). It is about 16 km (10 mi) long and from 1.6 to 4.8 km (1 to 3 mi) wide and covers an area of about 42 sq km (16 sq mi). The maximum depth is about 76 m (250 ft). The waters of nearby Lake of Neuchâtel reach Lake Biel through the Schuss River and Thiele Canal. It is drained by the Aare, a tributary of the Rhine.
