Garmisch-Partenkirchen, town in south central Germany, in Bavaria. Garmisch is an internationally famous winter sports resort situated in the Bavarian Alps at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak. The town, formed in 1935 by the merger of the villages of Garmisch and Partenkirchen, was the site of the 1936 Winter Olympic Games. Population (1989 estimate) 25,900.
