About 61 km (38 mi) long, it flows through a delta to its submerged mouth in Mobile Bay at Mobile, Alabama, on the Gulf of Mexico. The river is an important artery for transporting agricultural and industrial goods. It is believed that the first Europeans to explore Mobile Bay were the Spanish in 1511. Almost 200 years later, in 1699, the French brothers Pierre Le Moyne and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne further explored the area. In 1864 the bay was the site of an important battle of the American Civil War, which resulted in victory for the Union admiral David Farragut.
