Kristiansand, town in southern Norway, capital of Vest-Agder County, a seaport on Skagerrak Strait. Fish products, paper, pulp, and timber are shipped out from here. Kristiansand was founded in 1641 by Christian IV, king of Denmark and Norway, after whom it is named. The city became an episcopal see in 1682. Population 76,749 (2005 estimate).
