Cook Strait, channel separating the North Island from the South Island, New Zealand, and connecting the Tasman Sea on the west with the Pacific Ocean on the east. It varies in width from about 25 to 100 km (15 to 60 mi). The strait is named after the British explorer Captain James Cook, who sailed through it in 1769 while surveying the New Zealand coast.
