Merionethshire

Encyclopedia Article

Merionethshire, former county in west Wales; Dolgellau was the county town. Merionethshire comprised a largely mountainous area bordering on Cardigan Bay. It had an economy that was dependent on livestock raising. Its remoteness made Merionethshire one of the last regions of Wales to come under English rule. In 1974 it became part of the new county of Gwynedd.
