Encyclopedia Article
Max Pechstein (1881-1955), German Expressionist painter, born near Zwickau. He was associated with Die Brücke from 1906 and, with the aim of consolidating German Expressionism, he founded Neue Sezession in Berlin in 1910. He painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and beach scenes. Inspired by tribal art, he used bright undiluted colours and vigorous brushstrokes. His paintings tended to be more eclectic, more naturalistic, and less innovative than the work of other Expressionists.
