Windows Live® Search Results Pemba, island, north-eastern Tanzania, in the Indian Ocean, near Zanzibar Island. It is 68 km (42 mi) long and 23 km (14 mi) wide, with an area of 984 sq km (380 sq mi). It was part of a British protectorate from 1890 to 1963; it became part of Tanzania in 1964. The chief towns are Wete and Chake Chake. Cloves and copra are the chief exports. The population (1988) is 265,039.
