Encyclopedia Article

Sedgwick, Adam (1785-1873), British geologist, who helped to lay the scientific foundations of the science. He was born in Dent, Westmorland (now in Cumbria), and educated at the University of Cambridge, where he subsequently became Professor of Geology. His field studies of rock strata in the British Isles and Europe, sometimes with the British geologist Roderick Impey Murchison, served to identify the Cambrian period of geological time.
