Kragujevac, city in central Serbia, located on the River Lepenica. The city is an important centre for the manufacture of munitions and motor vehicles, and processed food is also produced. Svetozar Marković University (1976) is located here. First mentioned in written records in the 17th century, Kragujevac was the capital of the domain of Serbian prince Miloš Obrenović I from 1818 to 1839, during the revolts against Turkey. The Serbian national assembly met here from 1868 to 1880. In 1941 the German occupying forces executed 7,000 males between the ages of 14 and 70 in the Kragujevac region. Population 145,890 (2002).
