Plymouth

Plymouth, town on south-west Montserrat, in the parish of St Anthony, the country's capital and a port on the Caribbean Sea. Until the mid-1990s it was the administrative and distributive centre of the island, and in 1991 had an estimated population of 3,500. The eruption of the nearby volcano of Soufriere Hills in 1995 led to its evacuation and a subsequent eruption in 1997 partially burnt the then uninhabited town.
