Arlington (Texas, United States), city, Texas, United States. Located on the Trinity River and Lake Arlington, between Dallas and Fort Worth, it is a manufacturing and distribution centre. Products include motor vehicles, aircraft, farm equipment, fabricated plastics, electronic components, printed materials, and processed foods. Developing car and aerospace industries sparked a rapid population increase in the 1980s. Arlington is the site of the University of Texas at Arlington (1895) and the Ballpark in Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers baseball team. It was founded in 1875 and is named after Arlington, Virginia. After the arrival of the railway in 1876, it grew as a cotton-ginning centre. Large-scale industrialization began in the early 1950s. Population (1980) 160,123; (1990) 261,721.
