Encyclopedia Article

Antium, city of ancient Latium, built on a rocky promontory, near Rome. The city was subdued by the Romans in 338 bc. Antium was the birthplace of two Roman emperors, Caligula and Nero. Near the shore are ruins of Roman villas. Various artworks, including the sculpture of the Borghese Gladiator, have been found in the vicinity. The modern town of Anzio is on the site of Antium.
