Asama or Asamayama, volcano in Japan, on central Honshu, the largest active volcano in the country. Asama is 2,542 m (8,340 ft) high. The earliest recorded eruption occurred in 1650. A severe eruption in 1783 destroyed several villages and primeval forest. Since then it has only erupted in showers of ashes and stones. Its crater is circular in shape and measures about 1.2 km (0.75 mi) in circumference.
