Map of Ibiza (island)

Ibiza (island), island, eastern Spain, one of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It covers an area of 570 sq km (220 sq mi) and has a coastline approximately 210 km (130 mi) long. The highest point, at 472 m (1,550 ft), is Atalaiassa. The island’s climate is very mild, ranging from 12° C in January to 27° C in August. Ibiza and Formentera (also in the Balearics) are often called las islas Pitiusas (pine-covered islands); apart from pine trees, olives, figs, and almonds are grown, as well as a wide variety of flowers. Aside from agriculture, fishing, and crafts, the island’s economy is primarily based on tourism.

Ibiza is divided into five municipalities and has a population of about 80,000. It is best known for its holiday resorts, clubs, and nightlife. Nevertheless, the interior of the island is relatively unspoilt. Places of interest include Portinatx, a popular beauty spot; salt fields at the southernmost tip of the island; Cueva Can Marca, prehistoric caves above Puerto de San Miguel; and the Hippy Market at Es Cana. The island’s biodiversity and historic significance were recognized in 1999, when it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
