Kārūn, river, west central Iran, rising in the central section of the Zard Kūh Mountains. It is the only navigable river of Iran. After following a circuitous route for about half its length, it turns south-west, is joined by the Dez River near Shushtar, and flows south-west past Āvāz to its confluence with the Shatt Al Arab River at Khorramshahr. The river's total course is about 725 km (about 450 mi), and it is navigable from its mouth to Shushtar.
