Lake Van, also Van Golü, salt-water lake, eastern Turkey, between the sources of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, at an altitude of more than 1,720 m (5,643 ft). The lake is about 121 km (75 mi) long and between 16 and 80 km (10 and 50 mi) wide; it has an area of 3,763 sq km (1,453 sq mi). The shores of Lake Van are irregular, and the lake is surrounded by densely wooded mountains. Lake Van receives a few short streams, but it has no outlet. On the eastern shore is the town of Van.
