Gelibolu (in English, Gallipoli), city and seaport in north-western Turkey, in Çanakkale Province on a narrow peninsula extending into the Dardanelles. Situated in European Turkey, Gelibolu has two harbours and is strongly fortified. Lignite, copper, and petroleum are all extracted in the area surrounding the city. Roman and Byzantine ruins are in the immediate vicinity. The city has long been strategic in the defence of İstanbul (formerly Constantinople) and was the scene of a major military campaign in World War I, the so-called Gallipoli and Dardanelles campaign. Population (1990) 40,020.
