Windows Live® Search Results Carniola (German, Krain), historical region, western Slovenia, formerly a Crown land and duchy of Austria. The mountainous region, with an area of about 9,838 sq km (3,800 sq mi), was settled by the Slovenes during the 6th century ad and was an Austrian duchy from the 14th century until 1849, when it became a Crown land. In 1918 Carniola was partitioned between Yugoslavia and Italy; nearly 80 per cent of the region was given to Yugoslavia. In 1947 the Italian portion passed to Yugoslavia. Slovenia became an independent nation in 1991.
