Liaoyang (also Liao-yang), city in north-east China in Liaoning Province on a tributary of the Hun River. It is a centre of light industry located in a fertile agricultural region. Products include cotton textiles and processed foods. Also here are several Buddhist temples and monasteries dating from the 11th century. Founded in the 2nd century bc, Liaoyang was an important Chinese frontier post in Dongbei, and often served as a regional capital for the north-east in later centuries. In 1904 it was the scene of a major battle of the Russo-Japanese War. Population (1990) 492,559.
