Demotic, final cursive stage of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing, used from the 7th century bc to the 5th century ad, in business and literary texts. The Rosetta Stone is inscribed in both hieroglyphs and demotic, with a Greek translation. During the Ptolemaic period (304-30 bc) the demotic script was replaced by Greek. The term demotic Egyptian refers to the prevailing Egyptian literary language of the same centuries (see Egyptian Language). Demotic Greek refers to modern spoken Greek and to a modern Greek literary style based on the spoken language (see Greek Language).
