Casimir II

Encyclopedia Article

Casimir II, called The Just (1138-1194), Duke of Poland (1177-1194). Casimir was one of the four sons of Boleslav III, Duke of Poland, among whom the country was divided on their father's death. Although he was the youngest of the four, he eventually established his seniority over the others, expelling his older brother Mieszko from Kraków, the principal duchy, in 1177. In 1180 the Polish nobility and clergy granted sovereignty over Poland to him and his descendants.
