San Joaquin, river, California, rising in the Sierra Nevada. It flows generally north-west through central California and joins the Sacramento River shortly before entering the Pacific at Suisun Bay, near Oakland. The river, which is 563 km (350 mi) long, is part of an extensive irrigation and power project that has created a rich agricultural region in the semi-arid San Joaquin Valley.
