Cobh, (in Gaelic, An Cóbh), city in southern Republic of Ireland, in County Cork, a seaport on the southern shore of Great Island, on Cork Harbour near Youghal. It is a popular holiday resort. Cobh was once one of Ireland’s most important ports for transatlantic ships, and was the last port of call of the Titanic. St Colman’s Cathedral was built in the 19th century in the Gothic Revival style and has the largest carillon in Ireland. Cobh was named Queenstown until 1922, when it was renamed following Irish independence. Population (1991) 6,227.
