Windows Live® Search Results Stephen II (died 752), pope (752). A Roman priest before his election, he died only two days thereafter without having been consecrated. He was omitted from the numbering of popes by the Annuario Pontificio, the papal yearbook, until 1961. After that time, to indicate his tenure, dating from the time of his election, two numbers were affixed to the names of succeeding pontiffs named Stephen. His successor is therefore referred to as Stephen II (III).
