Trevelyan, Sir George Otto (1838-1928), British statesman and historian, born in Rothley Temple, Leicestershire, and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He served (1865-1897) in the British Parliament; he was also Civil Lord of the Admiralty (1868), Secretary to the Admiralty (1880-1882), Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1884-1885), and Secretary for Scotland (1886, 1892-1895). A nephew and protégé of the British historian Thomas Babington Macaulay, Trevelyan wrote a biography of his uncle, The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay (2 vols., 1876). He also wrote extensively and sympathetically about American history in The Early History of Charles James Fox (1880), The American War of Independence (4 vols., 1899-1907), and George the Third and Charles Fox (1912).
