Thunder Bay, city in south-western Ontario, Canada, seat of Thunder Bay District on Thunder Bay (an arm of Lake Superior). The city was incorporated in 1970 with the amalgamation of the cities of Fort William and Port Arthur (both incorporated in 1907) and the townships of Neebing and McIntyre. Situated in an agricultural, logging, mining, and fishing region, it is a substantial port with extensive grain storage facilities, and a commercial and manufacturing centre. Products include paper, timber, processed food, chemicals, transport and farming equipment, metal goods, and building materials. Tourism is also important to the city's economy. Thunder Bay is the site of Lakehead University (1965) and Old Fort William, a re-creation of the fortress as it was in 1816. Population (1986) 112,272; (1991) 113,946.
