Bataan Peninsula, mountainous area of western Luzon Island, in the northern Philippines, bounded on the east by Manila Bay and on the south and west by the South China Sea. During World War II the peninsula was the scene of heavy fighting between Allied and Japanese forces from January 6, 1942, to April 9, 1942. Bataan fell to Japan on April 9 and was retaken by American troops on February 17, 1945.
