Clyfford Still

Encyclopedia Article

Clyfford Still (1904-1980), American painter, one of the principal exponents of Abstract Expressionism, born in Grandin, North Dakota. His early works reveal many influences, including those of Cubism, Surrealism, and Dadaism, but his mature style, beginning in the late 1940s, was innovative and individual. The paintings, totally abstract, are characterized by vast scale, extremely thick pigment, and strong colour contrasts, with large streaked fields of colour invaded by jagged fingers of lighter colour or by raw canvas, as in 1957-D No. 1 (1957, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York State).
