Andrássy, Gyula, Count (1860-1929)

Encyclopedia Article

Andrássy, Gyula, Count (1860-1929), Hungarian diplomat and statesman, son of Count Gyula Andrássy, born in Budapest. At the age of 24 he entered the Austrian Reichstag, and after holding various offices, he served as minister of the interior from 1906 to 1909. Subsequently he represented Austria in an effort to prevent the Balkan Wars (1912-1913). In 1915, during World War I, he urged Austria-Hungary to make peace with the Allies. As Austro-Hungarian foreign minister in 1918, in a note to United States President Woodrow Wilson, Andrássy offered to arrange a separate peace. The offer failed, however, and Andrássy retired from office. He was imprisoned in 1921 for an attempt to place Charles I, the former emperor of Austria, on the Hungarian throne.
