GrainsGrains

Grain, common name for the fruit of certain cereals of the grass family. The seed-like fruits are major sources of carbohydrates in human diets throughout the world. Leading grains include barley, maize, oats, rice, rye, and wheat. Other grains are millet, sorghum, wild rice, and triticale (see Crop Farming). A number of nongrass plants are often called grains, such as buckwheat, flax, and the soya bean, a legume.

Scientific classification: Grains belong to the family Gramineae.
