Chapala, Lake, western Mexico, on a high plateau, near Guadalajara. The country's largest, it is about 80 km (50 mi) long and about 13 km (8 mi) wide. Lake Chapala is encircled by mountains and has a number of islands. The principal source is the Río Lerma; the outlet of the lake is the Río Grande de Santiago. Area, about 1,075 sq km (415 sq mi).
