Chuuk Islands, formerly known as Truk Islands, island group of the eastern Caroline Islands, in the western Pacific Ocean. It consists of more than 50 volcanic islands, encircled by an atoll—a formation of coral reefs and islets some 65 km (40 mi) in diameter. With nearby islands, the Chuuk Islands form a member state of the Federated States of Micronesia. The administrative centre and principal island is Moen. Population (1990 estimate) 45,000.
