After emigrating from England, Taylor attended Harvard College (now Harvard University) and was ordained a minister. He lived in the frontier village of Westfield, Massachusetts, until his death. Taylor left strict instruction for his heirs not to publish his collected poetry, most of which is in the metaphysical tradition (see Metaphysical Poets). Thus, his Poetical Works was not published until 1939; since then Taylor's reputation has steadily increased.
