Rockefeller Foundation, philanthropic organization founded in 1913 by the American industrialist John D. Rockefeller for the purpose of promoting the well-being of humankind around the world. It is one of America's oldest private foundations and one of the relatively few with strong international interests. Within the United States, the Rockefeller Foundation funds programmes to promote equal opportunity for minorities. It also offers fellowships and grants in the arts and humanities. In the area of international development, the foundation focuses mainly on agricultural sciences, health sciences, and population sciences. Rockefeller provided the foundation with gifts that eventually totalled about US$250 million; more funds have been added from time to time. The Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial, established in 1918 to encourage worldwide child welfare and social science studies, was incorporated into the foundation in 1929. In 2001 the foundation's endowment was about US$3.5 billion; its grants and fellowships totalled more than US$197 million in 2000. The foundation's headquarters are in New York.
