Duchamp-Villon, Raymond

Duchamp-Villon, Raymond (1876-1918), French sculptor, who was one of the masters of the modern movement in the early 20th century. In 1910 he pursued an increasingly geometrical and abstract style. His head of Baudelaire (1911, Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris) is starkly simplified in its ovals and clean lines. His famous sculpture Horse (1914, Musée National d'Art Moderne), half animal and half machine, is a daring abstraction that influenced later sculptors. He was the brother of the Dada artist Marcel Duchamp and of Jacques Villon (Gaston Duchamp, 1875-1963), also an artist.
