Dionysius of Halicarnassus

Encyclopedia Article

Dionysius of Halicarnassus (fl. 30-7 bc), Greek historian and literary critic who lived in Rome in the days of Augustus. Many of his critical works are extant, including The Arrangement of Words, On Imitation, and Commentaries on the Attic Orators. He is most well-known as the author of Roman Antiquities, a history of Rome to the year 264 bc mainly compiled from the Roman annalists. Of the 20 books that originally formed this work, 10 survive in their entirety; portions of the rest are extant or have been summarized by later writers. Although not authoritative by modern standards, Dionysius' history is a valuable source for a period about which little written material survives.
