Neusiedler Lake
Encyclopedia Article
Neusiedler Lake (German, Neusiedlersee; Hungarian, Fertö), shallow saline lake, western Europe, straddling the border between Austria and Hungary. The lake, the size of which varies considerably with the seasons, has no natural outlet but is linked by canal (built in 1873-1895) to a tributary of the Danube. The lake is a popular recreation area for the Viennese. A sanctuary for rare and migratory birds is maintained here. The cultural landscape of Neusiedler Lake was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001.
