Tapajós, river, central Brazil, tributary of the Amazon River, formed at the border of the states of Amazonas, Pará, and Mato Grosso by the confluence of the Teles Pires and Juruena rivers. The Tapajós flows north for about 1,770 km (1,100 mi) and joins the Amazon at Santarém. The river is navigable for some 280 km (175 mi).
