Chattahoochee

Encyclopedia Article

Chattahoochee, river, south-eastern United States, rising in north-eastern Georgia in the Appalachian Mountains. About 660 km (410 mi) long, the Chattahoochee crosses the state in a south-westerly direction to West Point, Georgia, where it turns south, forming part of the boundary between Georgia and Alabama and part of the boundary between Georgia and Florida. At the south-western corner of Georgia it unites with the Flint River to form the Apalachicola River of Florida. The river is navigable for steamboats as far north as Columbus, Georgia. Lake Sidney Lanier, north-east of Atlanta, and West Point Reservoir, west of LaGrange, are formed behind dams on the Chattahoochee.
