Evaporite, sedimentary rock formed over geologic time from the residues left as salty waters of ancient seas or lakes evaporated in arid locations. Limestone, dolomite, gypsum, halite, and many other minerals are common constituents of evaporites, which occur on all continents and are often associated with deposits of gas and oil.
