Encyclopedia Article

Mohawk, central New York, the principal tributary of the Hudson River. It flows south-east until, after a course of 238 km (148 mi), it enters the Hudson at Cohoes. It passes through the renowned Mohawk Valley. Utica, Rome, and Schenectady are the chief cities on its banks. Part of the river was included in the Erie Canal, now part of the New York State Barge Canal System.
