Windows Live® Search Results Brown University, institution of higher learning in Providence, Rhode Island, one of the oldest in the United States. Founded as Rhode Island College in 1764, the institution was renamed in honour of Nicholas Brown, an alumnus of the class of 1786. In 1971, Pembroke College for women was fully merged with Brown. The university confers degrees in arts, sciences, medicine, and engineering.
