Brown University, institution of higher learning in Providence, Rhode Island, one of the oldest in the United States. Founded as Rhode Island College in 1764, the institution was renamed in honour of Nicholas Brown, an alumnus of the class of 1786. In 1971, Pembroke College for women was fully merged with Brown. The university confers degrees in arts, sciences, medicine, and engineering. Its library system contains more than 2 million volumes, maps, and manuscripts, including the collections of John Milton Hay and John Carter Brown. See also Ivy League.
