Bohol, province, southern Philippines, formed by Bohol Island and several neighbouring islands. Bohol Island, in the Bohol Sea, lies between the islands of Cebu to the north-west, Leyte to the north-east, and Mindanao to the south. It has an area of 3,864 sq km (1,492 sq mi). Generally mountainous, the northern and western coasts of Bohol Island are bordered by reefs. The island contains deposits of gold, copper, phosphate, coal, and iron, and numerous mineral springs. The province is renowned for its “Chocolate Hills”, a unique geological feature in this limestone area. Chief industries include the weaving of silk, cotton fabrics, and blankets. Tagbilaran (population, 1990, 56,000) is the provincial capital. Area of province, 4,079 sq km (1,575 sq mi); population 948,000 (1990).
