Anacreon

Encyclopedia Article

Anacreon (c. 570-c. 485 bc), Greek lyric poet, born in Teos, Asia Minor (now Siğacik, Turkey). He spent most of his life in Sámos, Athens, and Thessalía. Anacreon was known for his satires and short poems, which have given the name anacreontic to a similar type of poetry. Only a few fragments of his work have been preserved. They are mostly light and urbane songs of love and wine, notable for their simplicity and clarity of expression.
