Windows Live® Search Results Muntjac, common name for certain small Asian deer characterized by short, two-tined antlers and by upper canine teeth that are prolonged into tusks in the adult males. Muntjacs stand 41 to 78 cm (16 to 31 in) high at the shoulder. They inhabit densely wooded regions. Because they bark in response to predators or other disturbances, muntjacs are also called barking deer. The Indian muntjac, a typical species, is golden tan above and white below, with dark brown limbs and face. Scientific classification: The muntjac belongs to the family Cervidae and makes up the genus Muntiacus. The Indian muntjac is classified as Muntiacus muntjak.
